Houston Needs More Public Sports Fields

The need for more green space in Houston is well documented.  The Houston park system needs at least 79 new and equitably distributed park sites and needs to expand 20 existing parks to bring Houston up to national standards. Moreover, a comprehensive assessment undertaken by the City of Houston several years ago indicated that the city needs youth and amateur sports facilities much more acutely than any other kind of park or recreational space. Since the study was conducted, Houston has also become home to the U.S. champion soccer team, the Dynamo. The Dynamo organization is deeply committed to supporting youth sports in Houston, and is one of the Houston Parks Board’s partners in this project.

Aggressive urban development has made it difficult for additional large parks to be added to the city’s inventory, and the shortage of space for sports and recreation is even greater than the shortage for more passive park activities.

This situation is compounded by the fact that Houston is one of the most youthful cities in the country, with over 70 percent of its population under the age of 44 and 30 percent under the age of 19. Over half of Houston’s population at one time or another has been involved in youth sports, and the demand for these activities is projected to increase in the years ahead, increasing the pressure on the existing shortage of appropriate facilities. An estimated 80,000 youth and 40,000 adults in Houston play soccer.

Houston Amateur Sports Park Will Help Address the Need

In June 2008, the City of Houston acquired the ideal site for the new public sports campus located at the intersection of Route 288 and Airport Boulevard. This $8.5 million, 95-acre property will allow us to take a significant step in closing the public sports facilities deficit. The site has the advantage of being conveniently located with easy access to downtown and dense urban communities in need of access to sports fields. The property is located on the banks of the scenic Sims Bayou, less than a mile from Harris County Flood Control District’s beautiful Hill at Sims Bayou project, and has the opportunity to connect to a 15-mile long uninterrupted greenway trail along Sims Bayou proposed to extend from Milby Park upstream. This means that ultimately many Houstonians will be able to jog, walk, or ride their bicycles to the Park.

When fully built, well over 500,000 people are expected to visit the Sports Park to play or view practices and events each year.
