Fundraising for Privately Funded Improvements Underway

Willow Park, acquired in 1957, is approximately 7.63 acres surrounded by several neighborhoods including Willow Meadows, Willowbend, and Precinct 287. Although Willow Park has undergone a number of improvements over the years, as the community has grown, so have the needs of the park.

In 2000, a group of neighbors from Willow Meadows and Willowbend came together to form the Willow Park Renovation Committee.  Their goal was to renovate the park with safe and attractive play equipment, move the play areas closer together so that children of all ages can be properly supervised, and add a covered shelter to provide a gathering place for families as well as providing some relief from the sun.

The Willow Park Renovation Project received approximately $488,000 in public construction dollars from the City of Houston.  With this bond money, the park received the following improvements completed in 2007:

  • Construction of a play area for children ages 5-12
  • Construction of a gazebo
  • Correction of many of the drainage problems
  • Renovation of the tennis courts

Following the publicly funded improvements, the Willow Park Renovation Committee, in partnership with the Houston Parks Board, is raising private funds for additional improvements, including:

  • Construction of a play area for children ages 2-5 - Complete
  • Installation of exercise stations along the trails
  • Extension of the fence to keep children from running into the street
  • Installation of benches and picnic tables
  • Construction of a sand volleyball court - Complete
  • Construction of a basketball court
  • Planting of additional shade trees

Many thanks to The Baxter Trust for funding the toddler play, area and Bridgeway Software, Inc. for funding the sand volleyball court.
